The Upper Sacramento River

IMG_2283-Edit-Edit

The Upper Sacramento River is a blue ribbon trout stream that courses its way from Lake Siskiyou near Mt. Shasta down through its scenic river canyon to Shasta Lake offering 40 miles of opportunistic water for fly fishing. It parallels Interstate 5 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, both offering  access locations to its many riffles, pocket water, runs and deep pools. Considered a freestone river it provides easy wading conditions throughout its length. Offering stunning views of Mt. Shasta and Castle Crags as it winds through this thickly forested stretch the river is populated predominately with Rainbow trout but does hold a few good sized German Browns. It is appropriate for all skill levels from beginners to expert. The “high stick” method originated by local legend Ted Fay has been and still is a very effective method in catching fish but dry fly fishing and other nymphing techniques produce as well. Spring and fall seasons are best for dry fly fishing with hatches of Golden Stones, October Caddis, Mayflies and Caddis testing your skills. Nymphing is popular all year round  especially in the heat of summer and the cold of winter ….. note the river is open for catch and release fishng during the winter months for those who contract cabin fever. Consider one of our knowledgeable guides to enhance your day of fishing here.
