Klamath River Fishing Report

On Super Bowl Sunday the Iron Gate section of the Klamath River saw one guide boat. The clarity of the water was greenish brown and the wind gusted up to 30mph in the afternoon, conditions were tough but we had it all to ourselves. Many of my favorite spots were forever changed as half the trees along the banks were broken and dangling in the river. Despite it all fish were caught, fish were fought, and fish were lost. At the end of the day it was considered good steelhead fishing. After finding some nice ones I was happy to have some trips lined up this week. The following day they bumped the flows to 4k and the last bastion of California steelhead fishing became unfishable. Emoji sad face dude. There is a place however, were you can still go, pull up a stool at the bar and cast your line. Chuck caught one there last night.

Big fish are ready to play on the Upper Sacramento River …. the only reeeel trout stream open all winter here in Dogpatch. The traditional trout season has come to a close on the McCloud, Fall, Hat, etc….. by that I mean THEY ARE CLOSED! You would be surprised how many sports do not know the closures in Northern California let alone the regulation changes on the USac (catch and release, NO FRIGGIN BAIT, artificials only!) I saw two guys chucking salmon roe a couple of winters ago in the dead of Winter … dude, come on. In any event the USac has been a kind place this last week for our clients. Great clients and smiling faces, that’s what it’s all about. The river is fishing very good but you have to time your days due to the pulsing from the rain/snow we have been getting. Yes we are having an old fashion Fall segwaying into Winter. You treat the river like a steelhead river under these conditions, when the river is rising go eat pastries and have a beer but when she starts to drop then get with it and get to it. It’s a river not to be neglected during those days of Winter when your mind wanders off thinking of where you can chase some trout and have some solitude …. that can be now rather than next Spring. Fall In The North State

McCloud Dreamy Creamy
With all the current conditions we are putting up with you would think things are tough but guess what, it hasn’t been all too bad. Now that could change on the McCloud (talk about clouded) and the Upper Sac any time but up until recently both rivers have been giving up decent fish. Rain is the big nemisis and we are currently getting some. As you can see the McCloud color is off but that doesn’t bother the fish, they have to live under these conditions and eat still. You must be a tad more patient, work it slow and hard and be careful of course wading. Some very nice fish are being caught in these conditions with big rubber legs and sreamers. Of course hatches are less frequent with days cooling but the October Caddis are still out and about so dry/dropper is worth it. The Upper Sac has been on a roller coaster ride with flows, shooting up big time and then dropping rapidly. The color has not been too bad but you have to deal with higher water flows. All this reminds me of what Fall weather used to be like. We have been spoiled by the extended drought with summer like flows lasting into Winter but this is what the last part of October used to look like … contending with nasty weather and making adjustments … so cowboy up and get with it. The Klamath is showing a good push of fish with all the rain and the fall colors are spectacular on this State Of Jefferson gem. More rain on the horizon will only make things better for you steelhead chasers. Fall is now in full swing. We have had our first rain since last spring, the nights are cold and next weeks forecast is RAIN. The mountain is showing off it’s beauty with each snow and the colors are brilliant. Both rivers here are showing the fall uptick in fishing. The October Caddis are making their appearance along with Caddis and a variety of Mayflies. Nice fish, real nice fish are being caught on both the McCloud and Upper Sac. This is the time of year where you need to be prepared for all types of fishing … dry, wet, streamers will keep you in the game. The fish are HUNGRY knowing that winter is not far away so get your asses here … ditch the couch, forget the to do list, tell the boss you are REEL sick, and promise the wife/girl friend/husband/boy friend/kids/dog/cat that you will do anything (within reason) as long as you can get a pass to do some me time here in the State Of Jefferson.

Just back from a road trip to WY/MT in time for the shoulder season here in Dogpatch. This is the time of year I lick my chops for the many choices that start to present themselves in the area. Both the Upper Sac and McCloud River have shown improvement in their fishing. The fish are starting to get active with the cooler water and cooler days/nights. Caddis, caddis and more caddis are showing on both rivers so make sure you have some Fox Poopahs, Birds Nest, Split Wing Caddis, EC Caddis and Elk Hare Caddis on hand. The “mythical” October Caddis are also pupating now so think about Cased Caddis and October Caddis emergers. Reports of some nice fish have been coming in on both rivers and it will only get better. Also reports of steelhead half pounders and adults are trickling in for the Trinity, Rogue, and Klamath (we know this river better than anyone). The salmon are arriving on the Lower Sac and the spawning fish will kick in the egg bite there. Don’t miss out on this excitement …. so many choices, so many rivers and so little time. Last days of August on the McCloud

This August proved to be a productive month on the McCloud River. Some hefty fish from the lake have reached the upper stretches surprising many anglers with incredible fights and acrobatic get aways. Gotta love it. The water clarity and temperature drastically changes from the upper stretches all the way down to Bollibokka. Up top it has about 2-3 feet of visibility while the lower river at Bollibokka is damn near gin clear. The algae seems to be the only downside to fishing this time of year and diligent fly cleaning is necessary. Sadly, there are no real hatches and any mayfly that happens to get off the water gets waxed by awaiting dragonflies, mandibles slicing them in half in an unfair dogfight. However, fall is near and caddis hatches are scheduled. It will be a great time to swing through a riffle or skate a tail-out. We hope to see you out there.

McCloud SLAB … Aint No Steelhead
August is just about out of here, nights are getting longer, days are cooling down a bit and Osprey juveniles are spreading their wings and learning to fly. All signs that Fall is a few weeks away and starting to show … a welcoming after the hot daze of summer. Wild Waters Fly Fishing has still been having successful days on both the McCloud and Upper Sac though and it will only get better as the cool down kicks in and the fish get more active. Small bugs such as size 16 P.T., Micros, S&M, Birds Nest and Poopahs have been bringing grins to our clients. Fish hard, fish deep, fish the turbulence, and BE surgical …. the fish Gods will be kind to you. Nice thing about now is crowds are nonexistant on both rivers so for you nonsocial sorts you got it all for some me time. As usual I do expect a bump this Labor Day weekend of flatlanders but be forewarned we are predicted to have a cool down with temps in the 70’s.
For you Steelhead junkies reports of them in the lower Klamnath are coming in. Wild Waters is presenting a 4 day Orvis Spey Clinic next month near Happy Camp at Paradise Point. We still have a few spots open so check it out and give us a shout if interested …..

Guide life in Mt. Shasta summer 2016

Its been a great summer and the crew at Wild Waters Fly Fishing has been helping people catch fish all over our local waters. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys right now. Great guide trips coming from all around. Although the fishing has slowed on the McCloud and Upper Sac they still continue to produce everyday. The help of a good guide might teach some of the tricks to mid summer success. The Lower Sac continues to produce trout everyday as usual and some big ones are being hooked pretty regularly right now. But its not all about work all the time. We’ve been getting out and having some fun too.
McCloud River Fishing Report Thursday July 14th

Bollibokka and the Nature Conservancy are experiences some phenomenal fishing, too bad its only for a couple hours a day. Mid-day is tougher out there. Some of our peers are boasting midges with 7x, but I don’t even own 7x. It has been great wet wading/swimming and though fishing this time of year is not a number game, at least some big ones are coming to the net. This is my favorite times to chase big trout. If you are a “match the hatch” fisherman, stick with the Yellow Sallies and PMDs. Caddis and stonefly nymphs are more important then their adult dry form, but soon the shady spots will have mid day caddis hatches worth fishing. More and more bear sightings means there are some black berries to eat so no need to pack snacks. Have fun out there.

Gotta Be Two Fisted At Times On The McCloud … This Is Grad School Stuff
June is always the rocking time of the year and so far this year it has not disappointed. The snow melt has diminished, the days are warm, the bugs are out … perfect formula. Wild Waters Fly Fishing guest have been having fun and success on the McCloud, Upper Sac, Klamath, Trout Lake, McCloud Reservoir, and Lake Siskiyou. Early and late trips to the lakes has been producing large and small mouth bass with Lake Siskiyou offering its “secret” evening Hex chasing. Right now the Upper Sac is just about at summer flows. Mornings and midday fishing is all about nymphs and getting them down. Fish those runs, seams and slow tail outs deep (on the bottom) and tight line the oxygenated riffles for best results. Late evening hatches depend on which stretch you prefer but I suggest mid river up for you dry fly aficionados. The McCloud has been the McCloud, starting to cloud up a bit, cranky one day and game on the next. The Stonefly hatch has moved up river above Ah Di Na. Again nymphing here DEEP gets you the best results along with a dry/dropper in the pocket water. Grabs are quick so be ready to stick it to them when you see the slightest movement on that indicator.
