Summer Time Is Here

 Henry's First Day At It

Henry’s First Day At It

Upper Sac

The Upper Sac has been fishing well with flows just about at their summer norm. The Golden Stones are plentiful and fish can be enticed with a big Stimulator …. I always like to add a dropper off of it. With days heating up now you can expect to find fish in the faster water when the sun is high and definitely at the top of runs and pools. Evenings have been very good for dry fly fishing if you find the right spot. In the mornings I have been finding fish in those shady spots created by the trees and ridges. Nymphing the long deep runs require getting your bugs down, most fish are hugging the bottom, so get the lead out. Hatches right now are Goldens, PMD’s, Pink Cahills, and Caddis.

McCloud Magic

The McCloud is living up to its reputation as the McCrowd for this time of year but we are still finding fish on this very special river. Ah Di Nah Campground has been filling up early before the weekends so be prepared. The Golden Stones are hatching in big numbers so don’t be surprised to have one land on you to show itself off.  A big bushy dry fly with a bead head dropper is working well in the heavier water. You want to pop it rather than trying to let it have an extended drift, the fish love that action. Small nymphs are producing best now … LBS and soft hackles although you never want to forsake the rubber leg. During midday high sun the water is very clear so think stealth …. lighter tippet, making yourself less visible, and put away that noisy metal wading staff. Evening dry fly fishing has produced so it’s well worth hanging in there if you can although it’s zero dark thirty about 9ish now.

Give us a holler, we would love to get you one of our blue ribbon rivers.

McCloud River Fishing Report

The McCloud River continues to give up some great fishing. The river is in fantastic shape with showery weather mixing in with sunny days. The wild Azaleas are in full bloom and their fragrance makes you wonder if you are in a perfume shop. Bring your raincoat for those unexpected thunderstorms and bring your game face, the McCloud River has been giving up some beautiful fish. The Golden Stones are out and about and we have been having good luck with a big Stimulator or Chubby Chernobyl with your favorite dropper hanging off of them. Think stealth too, the clarity of the water is a good 4-5 ft. so skinny up on that tippet. It’s that time of year and folks are coming out of the wood works to enjoy this gorgeous river thus we entitle it The McCrowd….. Ah Di Nah Campground was full up yesterday with more sports rolling in.

Give us a shout here at Wild Waters Fly Fishing, we would love to help you enjoy this fabled river.

Cheers

Upper Sacramento River Fishing Report

The Upper Sacramento River is and has been a terrific option for fishing this Spring.  It is starting to sound like a broken record …. good to excellent. Flows remain at a healthy 400-500 cfs with many choices for you to play. The top end from Dunsmuir up river is still seeing a good number of Salmonflies and from mid river (Sims) upstream the Goldens are popping out. The lower river is all about Caddis, Caddis and more Caddis. Cool showery days are producing excellent hatches around midday. Nymphing remains very solid so think about Birds Nest, Poopahs, LBS and soft hackles. This is river is a great option during these busy holiday weekends, you have about 35 miles of accessible water to pick and choose from.

Cheers

Lower Sacramento River

Spring on the Lower Sacramento River is about as good as trout fishing can get. The river has had a plethora of bug activity with most emphasis on Hydropsyche Caddis and PMD Mayflies. At about 8K the river is in perfect drift boating shape. Classic side drifting methods with Jaydecators are your best bet but it would be silly not to have a dry fly rig set up in the boat. If you are one who loves drift boat fishing, we recommend you get out soon. This fishing will slow down to merely being great come the heat of the summer.

Upper Sacramento River

The Upper Sac has been consistently good the last few weeks. It is a safe bet that no matter how you like to fish, you will find some success along this 38 mile river. The upper sections Spring is still emerging and the hatches and best fishing are in the afternoon. Focussing on mayflies and smaller stones will provide good fishing on the upper half. The lower you go the more it becomes about Caddis and Golden Stones. These days are epic and if you are new to the sport, this is a great time and place to get hooked.

McCloud River

Most of our guide days have been on this magical river. It has seen a mix of weather and is in fantastic shape. The best and most fun fishing has been with the dry fly, however we have seen success on every technique. Major players are the PMD’s Yellow Sallies and Golden Stones. The fish have been healthy and consistently in the 10-14 inch range. That said the river has already shown off some big ones. A pack of very large browns attacked our poor fleeing rainbow trout pattern making a scene at our feet worthy of any film festival. If we had footage most audio would of had to been bleeped out. The crowds have been very inconsistent and many of our days include solitude in one of California’s finest trout streams. We specialize in this river and its short game tactics. Let us teach you how to turn those fish on.

Klamath River / Below Iron Gate.

The Iron Gate float is providing some good fishing under the Jaydecator. Fish are being caught all day, the best is between 9 and 12 and again from 4 to dark. There are a few places to enjoy a walk n’ wade but, by far your best success will come from a drift boat. Big rubber legs and birds nest have been the ticket. We are days away from the Salmonfly and Golden Stonefly hatch. For the rest of May and most of June we will be casting big dry-flies out of the drift boats. If you haven’t done this yet, get on our calendar. Fishing the big bug has a funny way of making you feel like a kid again.

Rogue River

Like the Klamath the Rogue is also all about the big bug. Far more popular of a Salmonfly hatch is the “Holy Water” on the Rogue. Ample walk n wade spots are available but many anglers take a seasonal pilgrimage to these waters and its likely you’ll see fellow fisherman in your favorite spots. The drift boat can offer a great way to float the upper sections near Shady Cove, with some room to work and who doesn’t like casting dry flies out of the boat. Mid day is best under the bobber (Jaydecator) , and you might just hook into a steelhead.

Lakes

Early in the mornings and at the last hours of the day you can find some sensational Bass and Panfish fishing in our area’s lakes and ponds. Poppers, Mice, Crawfish and Minnow patterns have been great. Nothing like catching a big bluegill brings me back to my angling beginnings. However nostalgic, these fish and the pursuit of them would excite any permit/bonefish/tarpon fisherman. Stalking your prey in clear water, perfect cast between trees to tight to the reeds, seeing the eat and a surprising fight will make any angler smile. Best yet….  no strip set necessary! You can hit em like you have a Lower Sac indicator rig on, or like Bill Dance.

Great Start To The Season

McCloud River Fly Fishing Report

McCloud River

image

The McCloud River awaken from her long winters rest Saturday. She presented us with her magnificent beauty, spectacular spring foliage, and perfect water conditions. Ash Camp as always had it’s opening day crowds but no problem, it was like a big group hug rather than a battle for spots. The McCloud does put out that kind of vibe for us as she should. Reports of fair to good fishing came in, it was a rainy weekend and full moon which can have an effect but our guide got folks into fish.

image

Nymphing was the proven method, very little going on as far as hatches but that will turn around very soon. With the great weather predicted this river too will only improve. Expect to see some Salmonflies and a few Mayflies but not in big numbers for the time being. The Golden Stones should begin their march to the bank and rocks soon so they will be on the menu for the fish. May and June will give us some of the best dry fly fishing that the McCloud can offer. Start making plans now and give us a shout.

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Upper Sac

image

The Upper Sacramento River is fishing great right now. With the diminished snowpack and lack of high water, May fishing will be some of the best we have seen in years. Most fish are being caught under an indicator but late afternoon and evening are showing signs of top action. We are starting to see the beginnings of Mayfly and Caddis hatches which will only get better from now through June. Salmonflies are around too and the Golden Stones are starting their emergence to the surface and rocks.

image

Excellent weather forecasted, now is the time to be here. Give us a shout, would love to share the fun with you.

Mt. Shasta Nearby Lakes Fly Fishing Report

Nearby Lakes

image

Just to switch it up a little, those looking for something different we are finding some great bucket mouth fishing in nearby lakes. It’s that time of the year for these ravenous creatures to go on the prowl and we are getting into some excellent top popper action. You might think about stalking these beast early morning and topping off the day with chasing trout on the river …. we offer just that.

Quick Opener Update

Upper Sacramento River

The river is in fantastic shape, the best we have seen it in a number of years. Recent trips and reports are indicating good to very good fishing. We are seeing some very nice fish bending rods from Ney Springs down to Delta. Flows and conditions will spoil you, it’s been quite some time since we have seen this great river in such excellent shape for early season. May should be outstanding, as the warmer weather settles into the canyon the hatches will continue to increase and as we all know around here May and June are the best dry fly fishing with multiple hatches of Golden Stones and a variety of Mayflies and Caddis. Get on up here, enjoy the fun and give us a call.

McCLOUD RIVER

The McCloud River like the Upper Sacramento is in excellent shape and should remain so due to the lack of a big snowpack. A recon trip was made recently down to Ah Di Nah and I am happy to report the road is open. Beware though there are a few narrow but passable slides….as usual though the road sucks and the crawl is still there. The campground is fine, looked great but the water had not been turned on yet thus no toilets. Check with the McCloud Ranger Station for the latest on the camp water. Fishing here too should be stellar for you early birds.

The Lower Sacramento River

We have been experiencing some dramatic shifts in the weather from warm and sunny to cold, wet and windy. It makes for a challenge but also keeps the fish from becoming stale. They have been switching their diets around depending upon the weather from Beatis, PMD’s, Caddis, Stones, and the Sucker Spawn egg. If one is not working try one of the other. We’ve seen the best bite mid day. Dry Fly Fisherman are able to rise a few fish a day mostly during a PMD hatch. However, the majority of the fish are being caught side drifting with deep nymphs and Jaydecators.

The 10 day forecast looks like the warm weather we’ve been waiting for. We have talented guides available to take you and your fishing buddy on a “must do” float trip down this amazing river. Give us a call. 877-934-7466.

The Upper Sacramento River

The Upper Sac has seen some radical changes this last few weeks. From snow to rain, to hot days with snowmelt. We’ve seen this river fluctuate in flows and turbidity. However, I am pleased to say this blue water trout stream is now in fantastic spring shape and fishing well. We have seen some quality fish up and down this 40 mile system. Fish from 10” to 16’’ and bigger are being caught on the dry as well as the nymph. It is certainly not a numbers game but a quality spring day can make any angler smile. If you like fishing the big bug, we have seen those prehistoric Salmonflies flying over the river. There are always a couple pig rainbows looking for that big bug, be the angler that shows em a sample. Despite that big meal available, most of the fish are being caught on mayflies. A favorite technique is swinging soft-hackles through the tail-outs. You’ll see us doing plenty of walk n wade trips as well as floating the lower section is one of our rafts give us a wave, or a call.

The McCloud River

She slept well this winter with very few high flows and no devastating flushes. As I walk her banks now I can see spring emerging, the dogwoods are blooming, redbud is popping and the green of fresh growth is hard to ignore. Opening day is Sat the 26th. Not one of these trout have seen a fly for five months. The McCloud is our specialty and we have guides available. Lets get you out.

The Coast

Wether you just can’t give up swinging the spey rod, chasing steelhead or just love fishing on the coast, the Smith River is your bet. The river closes at the end of the month and is dropping into perfect shape for her last days of the season. Flows will be around 3000 this weekend. Still… chrome bright fish enter from the sea and charge upstream to spawn. Some anglers swear the biggest of the year come at this time. We have guides who love this place and one who lives on her banks.

Spring Fishing Update

Coastal Steelhead
Coastal Steelhead fishing is coming to an end, but it’s not over yet.  It’s Spring, we’ve been fishing in T-shirts and been fishing in Snow.  Last couple of weeks we spent days on the Smith, the Rogue system and the Umpqua rivers.  Some upriver fish are still being caught but the end is near. It’s been a very good year for us on the coast, looking forward to chasing some Sea Run Cutthroats soon.
Chuck 2018 Coast (3)
 Chuck 2018 Coast

The Lower Sacramento River
The Lower Sacramento is always a Spring highlight.  The river remains low and is constricted so consequently the fish are stacking up in the juicy riffles and runs.  The weather has been a mix of blue bird days sprinkled in with April showers. The fishing is good to excellent and we’re having fun out there.  Flies of all kinds are hatching and folks are catching fish on quite a few different patterns.  The upper section of the river (up from the 44 bridge) closed on the first of April, but don’t sweat it, the fish are very happy down river to see you all. This currently is our top pick for NorCal fishing right now.
 IMG_1339
IMG_1330

The Klamath River
The Klamath River is going to be left alone by us for a little bit.  There are some fish to be caught but this is not a highlighted time on this river.  We will be back later in the Spring and early summer for some Salmon Flies.  Check back around June.
 image6

The Upper Sacramento River
The Upper Sacramento is in its roller coaster mode for spring fishing.  Snow melt and rain have produced extra water running from the tributaries but forecast are showing a break soon. The water is clear and the fish can be anywhere.  Try stonefly nymphs and mayflies and don’t be shy of the dry fly. We have been seeing Salmonflies midday along with March Browns …. either imitation can raise a fish even if you don’t see any noses poking up. This river at higher flows can fish well, so no worries, put it on your list now and beat the soon to arrive crowds.
IMG_20180409_124005936

The McCloud River
The McCloud River opens on the 28th of this month and we will be out there. A recent recon shows conditions and flows looking with very reasonable. This lucky guy has been out catching fish but you are can be next in line!

Great Winter Fishing

!cid_45BAE083-9C91-45F5-A033-22D9FA2C6A13.jpg

Well it’s been awhile but we are back. All’s good, the shop has reopened and is humming along with a newer brighter look. Fortunately too all the old laughs and lies are still present and Bob is manning the helm as usual. Compared to last year this mild Winter has opened up many fishing opportunities not only locally here on the Upper Sac but also all other nearby rivers that offer steelhead fishing. Chasing them has been the focus for a lot of us and the season certainly has not disappointed. Looking ahead February and March are prime months for these beasts so with the long range forecast showing no storms in sight guess what we are going to be doing……. and you should too. So far it has been a good steelie year on all the major nearby rivers with the Klamath River leading the way with a sustained strong return since Fall. In addition the Trinity, Rogue and coastal rivers have rewarded us with successful days. What a difference a year makes, come on up and enjoy the opportunities.

Locally the Upper Sac is fishing well, the flows are very friendly (600 cfs) and some very big rainbows have been put in the net. It’s predominantly a nymphing game but if the weather stays like this you will start seeing small stones, Caddis and March Browns appearing along with BWO’s. The pressure has been very light and midday temps are in the 60’s …. time to jump in on the fun! BTW the rainbows are beginning to spawn so beware of redds.

The Lower Sac has also been a good option. Temps in the 70’s, light pressure and plenty of fish. Flows are a constant 4000 cfs, much better than the 10,000 cfs we had to put up with last year.

All in all it’s has been an excellent Winter for fishing. Looking ahead to the trout openers around here you should be ready to get on the water from Day 1, our snow pack, which has a major impact on the early season with runoff, is nil so every river up here will be in prime shape and ready for you to have some fun … mark itApril 28.

Cheers

Happy Thanksgiving … Best Fishes To Ya!

Fresh Klamath Steelie               Photo by Rick Cox

Fresh Klamath Steelie               Photo by Rick Cox

Although the general trout season is over for most of our local rivers the Upper Sac continues to be open and will do so all winter. It has been fishing good its entire length. Stimulator/dropper is working mid to upper river along with a variety of nymphs. The lower river on those long slicks is always good for a Baetis hatch particularly on the cloudy days. My favorite nymphs for this time of year are Caddis Poopahs, S&M’s, Micro Mayflies, Soft Hackles and the trusty LEGS. Takes can be slower than you might be used to so get twitchy and set on the slightest movement. It has been raining so best to time your outings when the river is dropping. Long range weather forecast is showing a good stretch of dry mild weather coming soon …. my suggestion would be DO IT rather than think about it!

Steelhead fishing continues to get better with each storm that moves through. The rain has been such that nothing is blowing out on the Klamath River and fresh fish are moving in, they are being caught under a bobber or swinging, in the boat, out of the boat….whatever. This year has been a complete opposite of the terrible conditions last year ….  there are fish, the weather has cooperated and no crowds. Give us a shout if any of this tickles you …. trout and steelhead, whatever!

Cheers

What an incredible Fall season lately, big fish time on both the Upper Sac and McCloud Rivers. No complaining, just enjoying the rewards of the BIG winter last year. The opportunity is currently there for you to hook into one of these beast, this is the time of year they come out and play. The McCloud has always been noted for the German Brown party over the years and rightfully so but now I am seeing it beginning to manifest on the Upper Sac also.  On the Rainbow side I have seen more big lake runs this year on both rivers than ever before. What’s creating this you ask, I personally believe that when Shasta Lake is full or close to full (such as now) these fish have an open highway to move upstream to spawn. You will see the Browns spawning in November-December and the Rainbows spawning February-April. Unfortunately you only have until November 15 to enjoy the McCloud but the Upper Sac remains open all winter with special regs of course. Remember too with the rains, and it’s raining right now, the rivers spike so if you are considering a trip best to check flows or better yet give us a call. We are finding these fish in the deeper runs and at the tailouts taking nymphs, streamers and even dries.

The Klamath River is experiencing a very good showing of steelhead right now on the upper stretches. Our guides are reporting some quality fish coming to the net and things will only continue to improve. We have been getting most of the fish nymphing but swinging flies has had it’s moments.

Trout and Steelhead Time

McCloud Big Bow               Photo by Fred Gordon

McCloud Big Bow               Photo by Fred Gordon

October has been spectacular in many ways here in Dogpatch. Unlike the pain in the ass conditions of last year with the record setting rains early on this year has been very kind weather and fishing wise. The beautiful Fall colors seem to be matching what you would see in New England, the temps have been very comfortable and the fishing has produced some of the biggest fish brought to hand ever. The McCloud River fishing has been toughest but for those who have their game face on it has been and continues to give up big browns and rainbows. October Caddis are thick and are doing their dance in the late afternoon…. best luck has been on Oct Caddis Emergers, Pupas and Dark Lords.  By now, with the extremely clear water, the fish have seen enough bobbers and fly lines slapping the water that they are a bit educated. This is where you have to start thinking outside the box and use a little ingenuity  ….  the new normal. The Upper Sac has also been a bit of a struggle, the wind has kicked in a lot of leaves and the lower river is root beer colored. We have been seeing a fair to good return of lake runs which are always a gas to hook into. Again here the October Caddis are thick and best put on one of those big emergers. The Klamath River season is in full swing now, we are finding half pounders and adults on every trip, this year is looking like a good steelhead year so far, give us a shout here at Wild Waters Fly Fishing.

Cheers

Don Hooked Up Upper Sac             Photo by Rick Cox

Fall has really kicked in locally now with it all of our fishing arenas open and ready for business. The Upper Sacramento River has started its October Caddis show from Dunsmuir up to Ney Springs. Any emergent pattern for these big bugs should do the trick during the day but be prepared to pull out those big Stimulators in the evening hours if not sooner. Over on the McCloud the crowds are showing up so be forewarned. Here the October Caddis are just starting to show. You will also find a variety of Mayflies and Caddis, the Caddis in the mornings and mayflies later in the day. And to top things off recent forays by the Wild Waters crew on the Klamath and Rogue Rivers have had success finding early runs of half pound and adult steelhead.
